I practice the Great Homage on a piece of wood-patterned mat, and set the goal of practicing the ritual for 111,111 times. Every time I perform the Great Homage, I would click on the counter and record the number of times the ritual was performed afterwards. With the passing of time, white marks are left behind on the mat since some of the colors have been rubbed off. So far, I have performed 80,791 times the ritual.
Generally speaking, sculpting can be categorized into subtractive and additive, with chiseling resembling subtraction to the material, and shaping resembling addition to the material. This piece of artwork is seen as a “subtractive” sculpture, with my body as a graver, rubbing against the mat for the sculpture to come into form. The Great Homage is also a way to let go of men’s arrogance. Through physical movements, one learns to set aside one’s pride and conceitedness to explore and give in to the truth. Therefore, this piece is a sculpture which carries spiritual meaning.
