After getting my very own camera for the first time in December, 2002, I started taking a photograph of myself every day. Then I used an inkjet printer to print out images taken that month on the same position of a single piece of paper. The images printed on the paper became blurred, darkened, and even turned black as a new image covered the previous one. On the first day of each month, I would use a new piece of paper and start the printing process all over again. Subsequently, I scanned the printed images of collected over 12 months separately and then photocopied the 12 pieces onto one single piece of paper. This results in the combination of the images within a year. This will be a life-long project.
In terms of subjectivity, I personally am impressed by the practice of non-self in Buddhism. This is the reason why I named this project The Denial One. Our faces are ageing and changing every minute of the day, which is what I mean by the idea that nothing lasts or sustains. Men’s faces change constantly and remain under a dynamic state. Therefore, without the heart and thoughts or ideas, the “existence” or “feelings” of an individual would be at a loss. Our existence does not happen in an objective world in which changes constantly occur. Rather, it is the constant changes occurring in the world which make us sense the passing of time and the presence of space. As each photograph is printed and overlap on top of one another, the newly-printed images do not completely cover the previous one perfectly. Traces due to dislocation still remain, which become the manifestation of the passing of time.
