Artist Statement:
Living with insulin-dependent diabetes necessitates daily insulin injections at specific times to maintain blood sugar balance. I meticulously record each day's dosage to track my glucose levels and overall physical state.
On a watercolor sheet, beginning at the top left as October 1st, I use a pen injector to release the day's long-acting and rapid-acting insulin (e.g., October 1st: 24 units long-acting, 35 units rapid-acting). At the droplet of medication, I blend it with a pencil, marking the spot, and then note the two dosages below. A line then extends to the next day, and I repeat this process of releasing the insulin, drawing through it, and logging the amounts until October 31st, completing this visual diary of my monthly insulin journey.
This work is an homage to On Kawara, Roman Opalka, and Cy Twombly. Their artistic concerns resonate here: Kawara and Opalka explored existential and action-based art, one chronicling the present moment in diverse forms, the other focusing on the immediate sequence through repetitive numerical inscription – both revealing the ephemerality of existence. Following the calendar, I documentarily inject each day's insulin onto a singular point on the paper, then stir and pull the pencil through the liquid. This stroke becomes a temporal marker, while simultaneously nodding to Cy Twombly's iconic gestural marks. For me, insulin is vital for metabolism and survival. A single stir signifies a day's passage, and the line progresses chronologically to the next point, continuing until the month concludes, finalizing this monthly record.
Given the use of insulin, sourced sparingly from leftover prescriptions, accumulating sufficient "material" for creation requires eight to ten months or more. This Insulin Daily Log October 2019 marks my initial realization of this concept, a significant breakthrough for which I feel a deep sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, due to its conceptual and performative nature, the work is accompanied by documentation, including process visuals, which I felt was important to include.
Twombly。 Roman
