My dentist told me, “Floss at least once everyday”, and I took what he said seriously. Upon arriving in New York City (September 6th, 2003), I started collecting the dental floss I used everyday. The pieces of floss were numbered, connected, and coiled around a reel to be used as material for measuring. As an artist in residence, I often ate greasy yet delicious hamburgers in Court Square Diner, which was just one block away from PS1 Art Institution. This was a significant American experience for me, and I simply had to measure the distance from the diner to my studio. So on August 21st, 2004, my 351st day in New York, I had accumulated 436 pieces of dental floss and measured the distance between my studio and Court Square Diner.
I pulled out the dental f loss from the window of my studio and threw the reel from my studio window on the second floor to the atrium. The floss was pulled through the atrium and the street in the direction of the diner. The numbers marked on the dental floss decreased from No. 436 and touched the doorsteps of Court Square Diner at No. 19. Detracting a piece of f loss which was mistakenly unmarked and four pieces of floss which broke along the way, the distance from my studio to Court Square Diner was 413 flosses (436-18-4-1=413).
According to the numbers on the floss, I converted the distance between my studio and the diner into the number of times which I flossed. The Dental Floss Project continued throughout my year as an artist in residence in New York. Time was symbolized by repeated personal hygiene activities such as eating and drinking, flossing, marking numbers, connecting, and measurement. Originally, eating, tooth brushing, flossing were daily activities rather than art. However, from the moment I decided to use floss as a metrics tool, the purpose and function of eating and flossing became multi-fold. To an extent, this was an expansion of art, as the act of living itself turned into art. This kind of transformation help me face the routines of daily life in a more passionate and aesthetic way. At the same time, this was a great way for me to boost my vitality.
我的牙醫師曾囑咐我:「每天至少使用牙線一次」,我真的有聽他的話。自抵達紐約市的那天 (2003年9月6日)起,我就開始收集我每日用過的牙線,將這些牙線標碼、連接,並用線軸收繞起來,以此做為丈量的材料。駐村期間,我經常在距PS1當代藝術中心有一街區之遙的Court Square Diner餐廳享用油膩但美味的漢堡。這是一個意義非凡的美國經驗,我必須測量出這間餐廳距離我工作室有多遠。結果在2004年8月21日,也就是我到紐約的第351日,我累積了436條用過的牙線,就以這些牙線去測量工作室與Court Square Diner餐廳之間的距離。
我從工作室的窗口拉出牙線,將牙線軸從二樓工作室的窗戶拋至地面的中庭,拉線穿越中庭與街道,向目標餐廳前進。標碼自No.436遞減,終於在No.19牙線時, 碰觸到Court Square Diner餐廳的門口。結果,扣掉漏標的一條牙線及因測量過程纏繞而中斷的四條牙線,自工作室至Court Square Diner餐廳的距離是413 條牙線(436-18-4-1=413)。
根據牙線上的標記,我將工作室與此餐廳的距離轉換成需要保養我牙齒的次數。這個〈牙線計劃〉整整貫穿我駐村紐約一年的時間,時間具體線性化成保養身體衛生的重複行為:攝食、清潔牙縫、標碼、連接、測量。原本吃東西、刷牙、用牙線⋯等行為,是日常行為,不是藝術。而當我決定用日用的牙線來做測量工具的那一刻起,進食與牙齒的保養就具有多重的目的與功能。某方面而言,這是一種藝術的擴張,活著就在創作。這種轉變讓我能夠以更熱情與美學的態度,面對千篇一律的日常行為,這是我增強生活能量的一種方式。
