I also had some ideas about measuring the bridges and tunnels in New York City, Lincoln Tunnel being a case in point. Lincoln Tunnel passed through Hudson River, connecting Manhattan Island in the east to New Jersey in the west. Since only cars were allowed to enter the tunnel, I rode in a car from Manhattan Island westward and passed through Lincoln Tunnel. As soon as I entered the tunnel, I started chanting “om mani padme hum” and counted the number of my chants with beads. As soon as my car left the tunnel and arrived in New Jersey, I stopped chanting and counting. Finally, I figured out the length of Lincoln Tunnel was equivalent to 221 “om mani padme hums.”
The action symbolizes the act of “crossing the bank to the other side” in Buddhism. The Hudson River symbolized the sea that surges, falls, and resurges, is the life that is born, dies, and is reborn again. The Lincoln Tunnel symbolizes bardo, an intermediate period of experiences between death and rebirth, during which one moves westward to find Pure Land, and during which people chant to help them with the process.
