A few more measuring projects were executed while my artist residency at Taipei Artists Village in 2008. One of them being the measurement of the length of Civic Boulevard 2nd section, the road adjacent to the Artist Village. I chose black label Johnnie Walker as my tool for measurement, while the way in which I conducted the project was to take a sip of whiskey and spit it out. The distance of each spit was defined as a “Spitting Johnnie.” I started spitting from the intersection of Zhongshan North Road and Civic Boulevard 2nd section while moving eastward to the end of Xinsheng North Road. A total of 12 bottles of whiskey were consumed while the length of section 2 of Civic Boulevard was 334 Spitting Johnnies.
I often feel that the most vibrant moments in Taipei is in the morning, during rush hours. In front of the red traffic lights were parked cars and motorcycles awaiting for the light to change. Meanwhile, with the countdown of the traffic lights, sounds made by turning of the clutch became more intense. As the green light came on, cars and motorcycles rushed forward, giving me the sense that they were brimming with vigor and energy. I used the slogan and trademark of Johnnie Walker “keep walking” as an analogy for the atmosphere in Taipei. However, a string of ridiculousness and surrealism abounds in this part of the city, where police officers often perform alcohol tests. What stands out as a stark contrast against the police officers is that a man is actually performing a different type of “alcohol test” (using alcohol as a means of measurement) while fleets of cars and motorcycles forging ahead, moving in the same direction.
