My musculoskeletal disorders including chronic back pain, muscle fatigue, and stiffness were the results of chronically hunching over a computer. I tried to relieve my back pain with the cupping therapy, which proved to be quite effective and efficient in reducing pain and muscle tension induced by fatigue. Cupping therapy consists of creating a vacuum cup and placing it over the selected area, which aims to induce local congestion and blood stasis for healing. The therapy stimulates blood circulation, induces hemoglobin, promotes metabolism, and draw out pathogens.
Fatigue Measurement uses cups of different diameters and arranges the positions of the cups according to the style of Yayoi Kusama. Suction effect is generated by the vacuum cups placed on the skin for about ten minutes while the local congest and blood stasis is induced. The color of the blood stasis is a reflection of how bad the blood and qi flows were blocked before, and therefore a measurement of fatigue.
This project really killed several birds with one stone. For one, it relieved my back problems and for two, it proved to be self-deprecatingly entertaining - I was motivated and inspired despite my pain. Thirdly, I was able to incorporate the style of Yayoi Kusama. Even though there is no profound meaning to Kusama’s images, they have become iconic in our popular culture. I transplanted the style of Yayoi Kusama by using polka dots to symbolize the fatigue and stress people today face, caused by the chronic use of computers and a lack of exercise.
