I learned from The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Purvapranidhana Sutra and decided to recite “Namo Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva” one thousand times daily for one thousand days. I kept track of the number of my recitations using my own blood from blood sugar tests. I would drip a drop of blood on rice paper. Beneath the drop of blood, I would write down the number of times I recited Namo Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that day. I will be doing this continuously for 1,000 days. However, there was one time that I did not meet the standard and also another time I forgot to do the recitation. Even so, I still persisted and continued my project. Even though I could no longer reach perfection, I still want to finish the cycle of one thousand days. After one cycle is finished, I will continue the cycle again for another thousand days. I would like to use my blood drops to keep track of the recitation count until I accomplish the mission non-stop every single day for one thousand days.

The project is a way for me to spend one thousand days on paper. Every drop of blood represents one day for me. To me, even though the drops of blood are dripped on different locations on the paper, they remain the same spot in my heart. They represent the seed of Bodhicitta. They also represent never giving up until reaching perfection. Now, I have come to understand the meaning derived from The Sacrifice. I finally understand what it means when one says, “Doing the same thing every single day like a ritual changes the world.” If we are able to focus our energy and life on accumulating something and continue to persist, then no matter how tiny our efforts are, we will be able to achieve greatness through the act.

I feel more and more that be it personal relief or social/national liberation, neither can depend on dramatic or revolutionary power. Rapid changes always occur overnight, and yet usually are superficial and do not sustain. Only by internalizing changes or changing the spirit can we really preserve and make use of changes. There simply is no other way. So do the same simple thing every day. Use concentration, patience, and devoutness to change yourself and the world.
