In 2006, I got the combined version of " The Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva," The Avatamsaka Sutra and The Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra. I decided to transcribe and learn the Ten Great Practices and Vows of Samant abhadra Bodhisattva. They included, “First, respect at all Buddhas. Second, praise all Tathagatas. Third, broadly cultivate offering. Fourth, repent karmic of hindrances. Fifth, rejoice in virtuous deeds. Sixth, request the turning of the Dharma wheel. Seventh, request Buddhas to remain in the world. Eighth, constantly learn from Buddhas. Ninth, cater to sentient beings. Tenth, dedicate all virtuous deeds.” The great practices and vows were an attempt to cease the sufferings of all people through collective efforts. However, there really is no end to all the sufferings, and therefore the great actions and vows will never cease to exist either. Furthermore, this kind of mentality would continue to dominate, while actions and words will not cease either.
The act of writing on white paper to writing on black paper resembled how people are originally bright and awaken. Yet they fell into the sea of death and remain there forever because of ignorance and obsession. The act of writing on black paper to writing on white paper symbolizes a mirror which has been dust off, representing wisdom and a reflection of the world as it is. I have discovered that the act of “transcribing” sutras helps me concentrate in a way never before, while the influence of the act of transcribing is intense and mysterious. I would not have been able to experience any of these from just studying Western culture.
