I began taking insulin since 1980, and started using a blood sugar testing machine to keep track of my blood sugar and insulin dosage since 1983. The results of these medical procedures are medical waste generated from the process. Since 1994, I started collecting medical waste generated from injecting insulin and blood sugar measurement. The medical waste was stored in standard-size zip-loc bags, while the date of collection was written on the bag with a marker. Approximately 500 packs as of January 2022. Every bag has been scanned digitally and printed as photograph, while the photos were compiled chronologically. On the other hand, the zip-loc bags will be showcased at the exhibition, with a red thread connecting all of the bags together. The thread will only be knotted at the end of my life.
I named these zip-loc bags as “pearls,” and connected the so-called “pearls” together with thread, into an open-ended rosary. At the end of my life, I will ask my friends to knot the thread and to complete the rosary. The core of the pearl is produced by the deposit of calcium carbonate within the shelled mollusk, which turns into a smooth and rounded pearl at the end. The process of this formation symbolizes how the pain in life will eventually turn into wisdom and virtue. For this project, as long as I am alive, I am continuing to make art.
