"Time" has no form; it's a concept humans derive from the experience of existence. In this work, I attempt to make "time" visible, while simultaneously reflecting on the nature of "impermanence."
I created this work using the concept of "pen walking." With a single pencil, I continuously write the four characters "逝者如斯" (The departed are like this, or Time flows like a river) in a clockwise direction. When the lead runs out, I sharpen it and keep writing until the entire pencil is depleted. The pencil shavings are collected into a glass bottle. The layered characters are from Yu Youren's running script of these four characters, written in various works, continued until the pencil is exhausted. After mounting the painting flat on a board, a quartz clock movement is installed in the very center. Thus, it becomes an aesthetic object with a time-keeping function.
