“Time” has no inherent image; it is a concept derived from human experience of existence. In It Fleets as Such, I attempt to render time visible, and through this process, to reflect upon the nature of impermanence.
This work is realized through the concept of Pen Walking. Using a single pencil, I repeatedly write the four characters “It Fleets as Such” in a clockwise direction. When the lead is exhausted, the pencil is sharpened and the writing continues, until the pencil is completely consumed. The calligraphic form of the characters is based on cursive scripts written by Yu Youren in different works. Once the pencil is fully used, the shavings are collected and preserved in a glass bottle. The drawing is then mounted flat, and a quartz clock mechanism is installed at its center.
The work thus becomes an aesthetic object that also functions as a timekeeping device.
