“Time” has no inherent image; it is a concept derived from human experience of existence. In It Fleets as Such, I sought to make time visible, and through this process, to reflect upon the nature of impermanence.

This work was realized through the concept of “pen walking.” Using a single pencil, I repeatedly wrote the four characters “It Fleets as Such” in a clockwise direction. When the lead was exhausted, the pencil was sharpened and the writing continued until the pencil was completely consumed. The calligraphic form of the characters was based on cursive scripts written by Yu Youren in different works. Once the pencil was fully used, the resulting shavings were affixed directly onto the surface of the drawing. The work was then mounted on a wooden panel, and a quartz clock mechanism was installed at its center.

The work thus became an aestheticized object that also functioned as a timekeeping device.

(Artist Statement)
