Extended from his 2010 project X Bodhi Trees (originally titled X Trees in Taipei), SHI Jin-Hua’s poetic work Basalt under the Bodhi Tree is a combined rubbing and drawing of a basalt stone on xuan paper.
In 2010, SHI planted the inaugural tree of the X Bodhi Trees project at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Beside it, he placed a basalt stone—not in a monumental upright posture, but horizontally to create a place of contemplation and solace. Years later, he returned to capture the form of the stone through rubbing and drawing, accompanying the image with handwritten lyrics from Leonard Cohen’s song "A Thousand Kisses Deep," reflecting upon the vicissitudes of human existence.
