2026 Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival – Thematic Exhibition “Becoming” : Hualien County Stone Sculpture Museum
Dates: October 31, 2026 – January 24, 2027
Venue: Hualien County Stone Sculpture Museum, Hualien, Taiwan
Chief Curator: Sean Hu
Curated by Sean Hu, Co-Becoming, the thematic exhibition of the 2026 Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival, continues an inquiry into the established relationships between stone, carving, and form, reconsidering the possibilities of stone as both a concept and a methodology. Rather than treating stone merely as a material awaiting transformation through carving, the exhibition approaches it as a point of departure for reflecting on time, change, the body, memory, life, and the environment.
Bringing together 14 artists and artist collectives from Taiwan and around the world, the exhibition explores the continuous transformation and emergence of materials, forms, and relationships through contemporary sculpture, moving image, interactive installations, and sound-based experimentation. The participating works are not defined by their use of stone as a material, but by the diverse ways in which they engage with the questions that stone brings into focus, examining the interrelationships between humans and land, nature and human intervention, and life and the environment.
Shi Jin-Hua participates in the exhibition with X Bodhi Trees, a work that extends his ongoing inquiry into the relationships between life, nature, and human intervention. Centering on trees, the work engages with the growth and transformation of natural life, as well as the traces left by the surrounding environment, extending artistic practice into a broader consideration of the relationship between humans and the land. In this context, X Bodhi Trees resonates with the exhibition’s exploration of the continual transformation of matter, life, and the environment.
